Having A Sweeping Service Clean Your Chimney

Posted on

If your home has a fireplace, there will be a need to hire a chimney sweeping service at regular intervals. However, homeowners that are new to owning a fireplace may not know what is involved with chimney sweeping or why this work is so important for their health and safety.

Chimney Sweeping Can Prevent Fumes From Building In The Home's Interior

The reason for having your chimney cleaned by a sweeping service is to remove the ash and other materials that could prevent the flow of air through it. If these materials are not addressed, they could completely obstruct the ability of the fumes and smoke from the fire to leave the house, which could lead to the interior quickly accumulating dangerous levels of smoke and gases. Ideally, the chimney should be swept every year to prevent this risk, and this is especially true for those that plan to use their fireplace regularly during the winter months as their chimneys can rapidly accumulate large amounts of this debris in them.

Flues Can Benefit From Chimney Sweeping Services

There are many fireplaces that may not use a traditional full chimney. Rather, they may use a flue. This will be significantly smaller than a full chimney, and they are often used with gas fireplaces as they will produce less smoke than wood-burning ones. However, it should be noted that these flues will still need to be swept periodically to keep the smoke and fumes flowing through them smoothly. In fact, the smaller size of flues can often lead to this work needing to be done far more frequently than larger chimneys as it can be easier for the flue to become obstructed.

Chimney Sweeping Services May Need To Access The Interior Of The Home During This Work

The majority of the chimney sweeping work will occur on the exterior of the home. However, these professionals will still need access to the interior of the house as well. In particular, they will need to seal the fireplace so that soot, ash, and other debris do not spill out of the fireplace during this work. Once these professionals are done cleaning the chimney, they may also clean the fireplace to remove the soot, ash, and residues that may have fallen into it during the course of the cleaning work. While this will require you to allow these professionals to access your home's interior, it can greatly reduce the total amount of work that you will have to do in order to clean up after the chimney is professionally swept.
